How Malaysian income tax is worked out
Start with your yearly income, take away your tax reliefs to get your chargeable income, then apply the resident tax bands. Rates rise from 0% on the first RM5,000 to 30% above RM2 million. If your chargeable income is RM35,000 or less, you also get a RM400 rebate off the tax.
Reliefs most people can claim
- Personal relief: RM9,000, automatic.
- EPF: up to RM4,000. Life insurance or takaful: up to RM3,000 more.
- Education and medical insurance: up to RM4,000.
- Lifestyle (books, phone, computer, internet, courses): up to RM2,500. Sports equipment, gym and sports facility fees: a further RM1,000.
- SOCSO and EIS: up to RM350. PRS: up to RM3,000. SSPN net savings: up to RM8,000.
Keep receipts for seven years. LHDN can ask for them.
Your marginal rate
Tax bands work like a buffet that charges more per plate after your fifth plate: only the extra plates cost more, not the first five. Moving into the 19% band only means the ringgit above RM70,000 are taxed at 19%. The top band also tells you what one more ringgit of relief is worth. At the 19% band, a RM1,000 relief saves you RM190.
